Imagine building a complete race car in a basement so small that when the doors are open on the car there is not enough room to walk by. That's exactly what 55 year old Ted Mckee has been doing in his basement in Kingston Tennessee for the last 3 years.
It all started about 3 years ago when he attended his first Southeast Gassers Association race. Ted said he always loved old style racing where the first car to the finish line wins and once he saw the SEGA race he knew he had found something cool to get involved in.
Soon after the race Ted started searching and found a 66 Chevy 2 post car in Indiana for the foundation to build a SEGA legal C/Gas car.
Ted being a guy that wants to win but knew he would have to do it on his small budget. He figured that if he did all the fabrication work himself that he would have enough left in the budget to buy an engine like he needed to be competitive in the very tough SEGA. So he made the trip to Spartanburg SC and instructed good friend Gene Fulton to build him a legal 306 small block Chevy for SEGA C/Gas completion. While Fulton was under way on the engine Ted and his uncle Raymond Ervin went to work in the small basement fabricating the Chevy's old school chassis, suspension, and roll cage. Even the paint and body work was done in the basement by Ted.
Ted said the project took 3 years because he had to do it on such a very small budget and had it not been for a lot of favors from Gene Fulton and a ton of help from Raymond it could not have been finished in time to start the SEGA 2020 season.
See Ted debut the car at the first stop on the SEGA 2020 tour at London Dragwayin London Kentucky June 6th.
