It's happening November 2nd atShadyside Dragway in Shelby NC. Pro Stock and Pro Mod world champTommy Mauney will be back in a gasser for the first time since 1970 when he was only 18 years old. Manuey owner of TM race cars where the best top of the line modern day Drag race cars are built will be going back in time to drive a much less advance machine.Richie Pugh has contracted world champ driver Mauney to wheel hisPar Race Engines powered 1961 Chevy in the very toughSoutheast Gassers Association B/Gas class.
Mauney told me today that he hasn't driven a clutch assisted 4 speed race car since he was runner up driving Robert Bowman's Super Stocker at Rockingham Drag Way in 1982.
Since then Mauney has went on to win the IHRA Pro Stock World Championship in 1990 and then won the Pro Mod World Championship in 1995.Not many can lay claim to winning a world championships in any professional class, but Mauney has done it in two different.classes.
At 67 years old he is still setting records driving a state of the art PDRA Pro Mod car. but is really looking forward to getting back to where it all started when he was 18 years old behind the wheel of a 4 speed gasser.
As a side note Mauney has been 3,79 at 200.8 MPH in the 1/8 mile at Shady Side where he will be returning to his roots in a 1960's style gasser. (one of the pics is Mauney running his 55 Chevy gasser at Shady Side in the late 1960's.
